What to avoid in the days before your Leaving Cert

May 30 / Dan Sheedy

1. Don't believe the ‘Predictions’ of so-called experts on social media. Predictions are in reality just guesses. These social media posts are click-bait as no one has an idea of what will be on the paper. Trust your teachers and experienced teachers when they advise what aspects of your course to study - the others are just people who don't really care about your grade.

2. Don't compare yourself to others  - support from friends is great but it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking everyone else knows more than you - they don’t.

3. Don't worry about a “hard paper”. No examiner will set an intentionally hard paper and if by chance the paper is challenging, the marking scheme will be adjusted at the marking conference to make sure the desired % of H1’s, H2’s etc is reached. This means there is no need to panic in an exam. If you are finding it challenging,  so is everyone else in the country and the marking scheme will be adjusted accordingly. Keep working through the paper!

4. Don't let those that don't seem to care about the LC drag you down. The old saying, misery loves company can be applied to the Leaving Cert. When the sun comes out, some of your friends who may not be pursuing 3rd level, or who know they haven't really worked all year and don't want to start now will want company!! Stick to the plan and you will get the rewards.

5. Don't put pressure on yourself to get a certain grade in a certain subject. The phrase “I need a H1/H2 in this” is damaging to you and puts you under pressure immediately. Take a sporting analogy, don't think about the result, think about the process. If you follow your plan, and do your best,  the result will come.
